Studio Butterfly, Virgínia de Medeiros
Studio Butterfly is organized in a box with three books presenting images that document the research process by Virginia de Medeiros for this project. The books also include texts by prestigious curators, critics, and philosophers, such as Lisette Lagnado, Luísa Duarte, and Peter Pál Pelbart.
Studio Butterfly was conceived as a space to meet the transgender women who collaborated with the research. It existed for approximately a year and a half, located in a small room in a commercial building in downtown Salvador. The elements used to design the space were gathered based on the artist's visual memories after she visited the bedrooms of transgender women who lived in the pension of Rosana, who was responsible for introducing the artist to this universe. To create Studio Butterfly, Medeiros asked residents of that space to bring their old and recent photos, along with family, friends, and lovers, and to tell life stories, which were recorded on video. In return, the artist gifted them with a photo essay, transformed into a book. This way, Studio Butterfly sought to be rather a collaborative platform that provides space for transgender people to share their own narratives through images and stories than an ethnographic document.
